Perfumer Bernard Chant
Bernard Chant has built an impressive reputation in the fragrance industry as the former Chief Perfumer at International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF).
His talent for creating intricate, yet effortless fragrances and his meticulous attention to detail to make each ingredient into a symphonic masterpiece was unparalleled. Chant's signature style was the patchouli powdered chypre, which he used to create some of the most iconic fragrances of all time, including Grès Cabochard, Clinique Aromatics Elixir and Aramis.
His perfumes were unique for their muted animalistic quality, which referenced sweat and the bedroom, giving them a distinctive and memorable character.
Perfumers and fragrance aficionados alike appreciated Chant's creations, with his concentrated perfumes leaving an emotionally dry yet incredibly present scent trail.
Even experimenting with fresher floral scents, he always added a suppressed emotionality that gave his fragrances a depth and complexity that set them apart from the simplistic scents of his peers. Chant collaborated with several brands during his career, including Estée Lauder, Ralph Lauren, and Coty. One of his most successful collaborations was with Max Gavarry on Beautiful for Estée Lauder.
Although Bernard Chant has passed away, his legacy continues to inspire and influence perfumers in their modern reinterpretation of the chypre style. His creations are still worn and admired around the world, as a testament to his incredible talent and lasting impact on the fragrance industry.
